In early March 2026, a series of attacks targeted synagogues in Europe and North America. On March 13, UN News reported the Secretary-General’s condemnation.

The attacks included an explosion outside a historic synagogue in Liège, Belgium; shootings at three synagogues in Canada; a truck driven into a synagogue and preschool in Michigan, where the attacker was shot dead; and an arson attack on a synagogue in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

“The Secretary-General strongly condemns these antisemitic attacks in no uncertain terms.”

“Houses of worship must be safe havens for all, and attacks on them strike at the core of our shared humanity.”

Stéphane Dujarric, UN Spokesperson

The Secretary-General called on authorities to protect religious sites, bring perpetrators to justice and work to counter antisemitism and all forms of hatred.
