New data from the Claims Conference estimates that about 196,600 Jewish Holocaust survivors are alive worldwide, down from 220,000 a year earlier.
Survivors live in more than 90 countries. Half live in Israel (97,600), and about 31,000 live in the United States. France (17,300), Russia (14,300) and Germany (10,700) follow.
The median age is 87, and 97% of survivors were born in 1928 or later, meaning most were children during the Holocaust. Thirty percent are 90 or older, and just over 1% are 100 or older. Sixty-two percent are women.
Seventy-one percent, about 139,000 survivors, received social welfare services in the past year, and 34% (68,000) receive monthly pensions negotiated by the Claims Conference.
